{"id":1281,"date":"2019-10-26T11:50:50","date_gmt":"2019-10-26T10:50:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.spoonerrow.cc\/?page_id=1281"},"modified":"2019-10-26T11:52:54","modified_gmt":"2019-10-26T10:52:54","slug":"recollections-ray-elliot","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.spoonerrow.cc\/?page_id=1281","title":{"rendered":"Recollections &#8211; Ray Elliot"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">I\nstayed in Norfolk during the war because I was in a reserved occupation, as I\nwas farm worker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">At\nthe beginning of the war in 1939 I was age 23 and I worked in the Fens around\nFeltwell, reclaiming land for agriculture.&nbsp;\nMy health was not good so I later came back to South Norfolk to work for\nthe Norfolk War Agricultural Committee. &nbsp;I\nlived in the village of Wattlefield, on a farm.&nbsp;\nEvery day I used the motorcycle lent to me by the Committee to travel\nthe 10 miles to the Isolation Hospital at Wicklewood, where I had my base. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">My\njob was to collect a group of men and drive them to various farms in the area\nwhere help was needed. &nbsp;I had to\nsupervise them doing various tasks on the land.&nbsp;\nSome of the men had never worked on a farm before.&nbsp; The men were mainly older or were unfit for\nthe services.&nbsp; We did get some youngsters\nfrom the \u201cNaughty Boys Home\u201d, although they never were any trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">I\nseem to remember it always being noisy in Wattlefield, as there were several\nAmerican air bases nearby.&nbsp; One day I remember\nstanding and watching a doodlebug come over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BBC WW2 Peoples War<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reginald Elliott 04\/04\/2005<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Elliott died on 8<sup>th<\/sup> May 2009 aged 93<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I stayed in Norfolk during the war because I was in a reserved occupation, as I was farm worker.
