{"id":1141,"date":"2019-10-25T18:37:57","date_gmt":"2019-10-25T18:37:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.spoonerrow.cc\/?page_id=1141"},"modified":"2019-10-25T18:43:37","modified_gmt":"2019-10-25T18:43:37","slug":"maharaja-visits","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.spoonerrow.cc\/?page_id=1141","title":{"rendered":"Maharaja Visits"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"377\" src=\"https:\/\/www.spoonerrow.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Maharaja1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1151\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.spoonerrow.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Maharaja1.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.spoonerrow.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Maharaja1-159x300.jpg 159w, https:\/\/www.spoonerrow.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Maharaja1-80x150.jpg 80w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption>Maharaja Duleep Singh<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Maharaja Duleep Singh (as he became in June 1861) bought or rather the\u00a0India Office\u00a0purchased for him, the Elveden Hall estate in 1863.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Elveden Hall\u00a0is a large stately home located some 20 miles away, just over the county border towards Thetford.\u00a0 In 1863 the estate was some 17,000 acres and contained a church, cottages and a school.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Placed into power at the age of 5, the Maharaja was later kidnapped by the British Crown at the age of 15 and exiled to Britain, where we became a close confidante of Queen Victoria.\u00a0 Such was the strength of this friendship that the Queen became godmother to several of his children.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">It was whilst he resided at Elveden Hall that the Maharaja visited on several occasions Mr and Mrs Routh\u00a0 Clarke here at Wattlefield Hall.\u00a0 On one such visit, he was the guest of honour and opened the fete!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The Maharaja transformed the then run-down Elveden Estate and turned it into an efficient game preserve and it was here that he gained his reputation as the fourth best shot in England.\u00a0 Upon his death in 1893 it was found that several large expenses remained unpaid and the estate was sold to settle his debts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Maharaja Duleep Singh (as he became in June 1861) bought or rather the\u00a0India Office\u00a0purchased for him, the Elveden Hall estate in 1863.
